You Won't Believe This

Governments are so bad at managing business operations that the Dutch government cannot even compete in the retail marijuana market. You're probably saying this has to do with all the hash bars in Amsterdam, but it actually isn't legal to sell there (only unprosecuted). The government is trying to sell marijuana legally, and it cannot compete with the illegal sellers in the hash bars.

Tip of the hat to Catallarchy for the post entitled "Dutch Government Sticks with Pot Inventory".

It brings to mind the Soviet firing squad in the classic bicycle tour of north Cornwall episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus who raise and fire on the victim, only to have their officer scream "How could you miss?"

The same issue of the Economist that has the Economist's poll of Bush v Kerry had an interesting profile of Phil Harvey, the man behind Adam & Eve mail order adult products. The article details his fight for legalizing (or keeping legal) the mail order adult business and ends with the line, "Might a mail-order cannabis business be next on his list of ideas?".

Intriguing.
