WNY Burg Makes The NY Times

A ski town where I spent a little time in the 70's and 80's made the Escapes section of The New York Times as a vacation destination - it even quotes someone I knew way back when.

Ellicottville is home to Holiday Valley ski resort. This isn't the closest or poshest ski resort to my hometown of Buffalo, but it did have the best combination of run variety and vertical drop.

Anyway, it's now a posh place for Ontarians to have their second home, with prices in the $175-$300 per square foot range.

Sage: did you keep any property from when you lived there?

Trivia: I grew up near Ellicott Creek (it would be a river west of the 100th parallel). It's no relation to Ellicottville. But, both are named after the Holland Land Company surveyor who platted out most of the Niagara Frontier from 1798-1801. This company owned all or part of the 9 New York counties west of the Genesee River (which runs through Rochester), and sold off all the land by 1840. Many local names are derived from people who had dealings with this company: Ellicott, Busti, Cazenovia, Red Jacket, and Big Tree.
