Sorry this is late.
We went to the memorial service in the Centrum Thursday night. Secretary of Health and Human Services Mike Leavitt - a Cedar City native - was a late addition to the list of dignitaries, but he did not speak.
Everyone involved should be thanked - it was quite an event to stage with 5 days notice. I thought Dr. Robert Nakken's statement was the most moving - particularly the part that it isn't the victims' bodies we miss, but their spirits. Governor Huntsman is a very effective public speaker - although I thought his speechwriters were presumptuous in their presentation of him having first-hand information about the victims.
I was surprised that the event was not better attended - my guess is 2,000. It was especially light on college students: you'd think they'd be more interested in a celebration of their classmates. The bottom line is that there are better attended basketball games, and that isn't right.
