Getting Who I Wanted
Eight years ago we got Bush vs. Gore.
I never thought highly of either one. I've been more tolerant of Bush than others though (hard times reveal flaws, but it isn't clear that change is better).
Almost 9 years ago, the choice was Bush vs. McCain. I thought McCain was an idiot then, and bit the bullet to support Bush.
We've never been asked to choose between Gore and Obama, but I think I'd probably take Obama.
This means that this election, I've been presented with a choice that takes me away from the Republicans and towards the Democrats.
I'm conflicted about that - which is good.
I think there are a lot of people I know who aren't. They should be.
Revealed preference suggests that if the election were Bush vs. Obama, and you were having trouble with Bush, that McCain would offer no better choice because we already passed over him.
For my part, it bugs me that there are Republicans who don't see this as a move by the Democrats in their direction.
Yes, Obama has said a lot of things that scare Republicans.
But ... so has McCain.
I don't have an answer here, but I wonder what goes on the mind of people who chose Bush over McCain in 2000, but are for McCain now. I think that's kind of a textbook example of something you should be conflicted over.
