It’s apparently an open secret, but apparently Utah’s senators are pushing to upgrade Cedar Breaks from a national monument to a national park.
I like Cedar Breaks a lot (and it’s only 20 minutes from my house).
Possible objections might be that Cedar Breaks isn’t that big (although it is bigger than some), or that it isn’t that interesting. I think the latter is an odd point: Cedar Breaks would be a national park just about anywhere in the world, except for the fact that it’s an hour down the road from the similar Bryce Canyon.
I think a big point in its favor is that it gets a lot of visitors. I have some trouble with having national parks that inaccessible (think northern Alaska, Samoa, or the Dry Tortugas).
I think they can also do something at Cedar Breaks that they can’t do at Bryce Canyon – pour some new money into it to change the focus from cliff-top down (as at Bryce) to valley floor up.
