Word changed its default behavior with Word 2007: if you close all your documents, then Word closes too.
This is both annoying, and a drag on system performance.
If you want Word to stay open when all documents are closed, the fix is here:
- In Word 2007, click the Office button. In Word 2010, click the File tab.
- Choose Options.
- Select Advanced.
- In the Display section, uncheck the Show All Windows In The Taskbar option.
- Click OK.
