Are you up on this?
Things in China are getting very weird.*
There was a nationwide internet outage this past week. No explanation, other than the two major telecom companies said it wasn’t their stuff.
There were reports of a coup being suppressed last month. It seems those rumors were true.
That may have been staged by supporters of Bo Xilai. The handwriting has been on the wall for Bo for about 2 months, and he was purged earlier this month.
The backstory for that is that both he and his wife are revolutionary princelings: descendents of key figures from the civil war and communist revolution of the 1920’s-1940’s. Of course, they’ve gotten fabulously wealthy from their prime positions.
Bo was in the top 25 or so leaders in China. This all started back in February when his police chief (allegedly more of a thug) ran to a nearby American consulate spilled the beans, and asked for asylum. The Americans took the information, released him, and he has since disappeared.
The beans he spilled were that Bo’s wife, Gu, who holds an illegal residency in the UK, had a British expatriate offed.
All of this is a very big deal … and most Americans are blithely clueless about the whole thing.
* vX has been filtered out by China’s state firewall in the past (you know … ‘cause I’m a threat to them), so if you’re reading this, you’re probably not in China anyway.
