Here’s a list of icons that no longer have meaning as metaphors: floppy disks to save, clipboards to cut and paste, address books, even CC.
I especially like # 2. I teach an advanced Excel course where we discuss how and why you’d put “radio buttons” in your spreadsheet. Motivating the name gets harder every year.

Then there are metaphors that never really had any sense such as wizard in the computer sense. How on earth does a Wizard describe a series of steps in a procedure. Such procedures are more like a checklist to ensure that the proper steps are followed.

Don't you think that metaphor was chosen because many people want their computer experience to make them feel like a princess in a fairy tale? You know ... everything gets taken care of for them ... and then they live happily ever after.
