Ambivalence is not the same as indifference, with which it is often confused. Someone in an ambivalent state of mind is experiencing an excess of opinion, not an absence of it. An ambivalent person may feel very strongly about the subject at hand without reaching anything like a coherent point of view on it.
I would add that, as a man, women have often accused me of being indifferent. In 21st century America, I just accept that sort of criticism. But, this definition suggests that I’m ambivalent a lot more than they suspect. Perhaps they ought to have not assumed my views were absent, but should have been more sensitive and probed a bit.
