There’s a new paper out by John Conley and Ali Sina Onder detailing the publication record of graduates of top Ph.D. programs:
The main conclusions are that class rank matters a great deal and quickly outweighs the ranking of the department from which a job candidate graduates.
I’ve always wondered about that. I went to a middling school in the midst of a steep decline. I didn’t rank near the top of my class in grades. But, on the other hand, the publication record of other graduates from our program roughly matches up with the power distribution found by Conley and Onder.
