FWIW: I live in Utah. It’s a small market. Unless you look very hard, every piece of hardware you buy is designed to satisfy California standards. For example, someone has already reached in our shower and regulated our water flow.
Perhaps the most amazing this is how easy it is to get, and understand the data on this. Just go to this page, pick a year, and start by comparing the columns #Def to #Bridges in the NHS Bridges grouping on the right.
Gee Davey … you don’t think D.C. is giving us their old legerdemain of pumping up a secondary problem so that we won’t focus on a primary one, do you?
Immigrants are strangers, and we should treat them accordingly.
They’re strangers but still human beings. No one is obligated to hire strangers, house strangers, or support strangers in the lifestyle to which they’d like to become accustomed. When someone else offers to hire, house, or support a stranger, however, we are normally obliged not to interfere. If you disapprove of your employer’s latest recruit or your landlord’s new tenants, you have every right to quit or move. But to overrule other people’s agreements requires a very good excuse.
These moral observations may seem obvious, but they have a shocking implication. Our current immigration policies treat immigrants worse than strangers, far worse.
Our immigration policy sounds like it was thought up by the mean girls in 8th grade: Ewww … strangers are bad, and those particular strangers are worse because they’re closer to us than some other strangers.
Here’s a little plug for some alumni. Trent* and Janelle Brown came to the our business convocation this past spring to talk about the success of their small business One Sweet Slice.
This is a bakery in Salt Lake City, specializing in cupcakes and wedding cakes (voted best in the city for each). And they won the show Cupcake Wars on the Food Network (see their blog). Here are some links to videos with some recipes:
* Trent took my Principles of Macro class in Fall 2004. My vivid memory of him is that he and Nate Janes convinced me to show one of the original JibJab videos, about the positions of presidential candidates Bush and Kerry, in class.
But, the amazing thing is that you have to know about half-a-dozen scientific, philosophical, and cultural references in order to get it all.
Honestly, I laughed very hard when I saw this the first time. The thing is, I only caught some of the nuances.
And then laughed even harder about 5 minutes later when I got another reference that I’d missed the first time.
And then 10 minutes after that I realized I was being heteronormative, and picked up on an additional reference (which probably would be humorous if I’d noticed it first, but noticing it last, I was laughed out).
