I had this same question today about enquiry vs. inquiry. In the US, they're pretty much interchangeable but supposedly in the UK, enquiry means a line of questioning, whereas inquiry denotes a formal investigation.

Agreed. There also used to be a distinction between emmigration (leaving the old country) and immigration(arriving in the new country).

I am reading a book published about 100 years ago, and have had to check many times on the e/i prefix.
