I was not raised to value awards very much.†
But I got a minor award yesterday that I’m very proud of, because it comes from a good idea.
I’ve always advocated evaluating professors by asking alumni who they remember … and not asking current students how they feel.
Anyway, SUU’s Career and Professional Development Center actually did this! They asked alumni which professors had influenced them, and when they got names, sent the professor a certificate.
It’s a cheap desk printer certificate, but it’s meaningful to me … very much like a child’s artwork. This means more to me than almost all the professional accolades I’ve ever received.
† In retrospect, I think this was all part of the quasi-socialism pushed in public schools in New York state during the 1970’s. I also think my parents, who were Rockefeller Republicans, bought into this sentiment too.
