Yes, Obama deported/removed illegals more than other presidents.
But, yes also, under Obama, returns of illegals went down by 80% from Bush II, and over 90% from Clinton. “Returns” is the technical term given when an alien is told they will be formally deported, but ar given the opportunity to just go home voluntarily and save everyone the trouble.
In short, Obama was like cops that don’t make that many arrests, but have a high conviction rate.
Caplan also puts together a deportation index to show that Clinton was the toughest on illegals, and Obama was the easiest in the last 40 years. Interestingly, the Democrats are at both the top and bottom, with the Republicans in the middle.
And, the deportation index is has been declining for all but one of the last 16 years, and is now down 75% from the end of the Clinton administration.
Trump may want to deport a lot more, but he will have quadruple the numbers to match Clinton. This seems unlikely.
Wonder if anyone in the legacy media will point that out. Just asking.
I still don’t like Trump, but maybe he has a point.
And certainly, given the currrent environment, it will not doubt be easier to increase pick-ups, but actual deportations seem likely to get less probably if advocates muster support to fight them.
What this really means is that we’re going from lazy cops and tough judges, to active cops and backlogged judges.
