Here's a belated link to this week's Carnival of the Capitalists hosted by Samablog.

For further reading I recommend:

• Political Calculations update on a study that came out a few years ago showing that most rich European countries would only qualify as poor states on this side of the pond. (There is a link to the report which I read when it came out - I highly recommend it - and it is accessible even for non-academics).
• Econbrowser chimes in with a post that is optimistic about oil price volatility (if not so optimistic about oil prices).
• Lastly, Gill Blog drew my attention to a report from D.C. that the costs of an Avian flu epidemic in the U.S. would be about $700 billion - or 2 to 3 times the costs of Katrina.

Carnival of the Capitalists is up this week at Crossroads Dispatches. I had some trouble linking to some of the posts (I think this problem is local), so my picks are limited - but check out Financial Methods with a table showing that how the red and blue states line up on gas taxes.

Carnival of the Capitalists is up for this week at rethink(ip). Forgive me for tooting my own horn, but I am very proud that the co-bloggers there put my submission leading a paragraph near the top. I'm hoping that this is indicative of the strength of my suggestion that New Orleans should not be rebuilt, but rather rolled into the existing Jean Lafitte National Park.

As to the other posts, I am always in search of practical ways to improve the lives of the world's poor, and here's a good one from Frugal for Life.

Carnival of the Capitalists is up for this week at CaseySoftware.com. My recommended reading for this week includes:

• A solid (and relatively neutral) discussion of why the media is baised at Gongol.com,
• A piece that could have come straight out of one of my principles of macroeconomics lectures by the Skeptical Optimist on how growth obviates the pessimistic view of the U.S. national debt position,
• A provocative piece by Part-Time Pundit arguing that the political left is spinning the news to help bring on a drop in real estate prices that they desire.
• Two competing pieces: one by The American Mind pointing out that Steve Levitt thinks the peak-oil argument is nonsense, and one from the formidable expert James Hamilton at Econbrowser who in a generally balanced piece offers a quote that this optimist finds worrisome "global production of light, sweet crude actually declined between 2000 and 2004-- peak oil has already passed, at least as far as light, sweet crude is concerned".

Carnival of the Capitalists is up at Weekend Pundit. Check it out! I especially liked the Coyote Blog post about some of the more bizarre rules imposed by unions and bureaucrats on the (now defunct) railroad companies of our past.

Carnival of the Capitalists is up this week at Political Calculations. I especially liked the posts entitled:

• "How Many Americans Should Be Working?" from Econbrowser covers the interpretation and misinterpretation of the labor force participation rate. (The author of Econbrowser is on many people's short list for a Nobel Prize in 10-15 years, so read up).
• "Industrial Production" from Brian Gongol discusses 4 myths about the decline of manufacturing in the U.S. (And to quote Firesign Theatre "let me hear it for me" for planting a seed that led to some of this post).
• "The Competition Fallacy" from Catallarchy is a good rant about an often abused point.

I was remiss in not noting that Carnival of the Capitalists was hosted this week by CaseySoftware. Everyone I know writes proposals at one time or other, so I heartily recommend the post entitled "The 'Seven Deadly Sins' of Proposal Writing" at Guerilla Marketing.
