More Plumbing = Light Blogging

The whatchmacallit (i.e., instant hot water tap) didn't come with the doohickie I needed (i.e. brass connector).

When I got home with it, the thingie inside the doohickie (i.e., integrated ferrule) didn't grip properly and I ended up getting sprayed with water (i.e., *&^%$!!).

Round 2 this evening.

Note to self: must remember next time that we have hard water, and to just start with the hacksaw when getting old parts off.

The vXparents are still "visiting" from Buffalo.

More like a forced visitation, as the tremendous storm of October 12th fades into memory.

But, they deserve lots of face time, so posting is getting cut.

This is the front yard of the vXbrother, the morning after the storm.

This is the back yard. You can see the depth of the snow on the roof of the deck of the house behind the garage along the left side.

The vXparents lost power, but the real problem was the flooding in the basement from melting snow.

You can tell the age of their house from the circa 1958 shuffleboard court in the flooded basement.

The always comforting thought of an extension cord that could go live at any time under the water.

The hot water tank is still the fly-in-the-ointment. The vXbrother got it dried out by the 20th, but now it needs parts.

Fortunately, the furnace fired right up when it got dried out.

So, their home is drying out. Apparently, it still stinks of mildew though. We've agreed that they will get the green light to go back when the hot water tank is running. Still gotta check the cable though.

Refugees = Light Blogging

I grew up in the outer suburbs of Buffalo, and my family there was hard hit by last week's storm.

My posting will be lighter while mom and dad wait out a return to normalcy at our home.

UCESP Conference Today

Today is the annual conference of the Utah Center for Ethics and Social Policy.

You've probably heard the aphorism "too many chiefs and not enough indians".

Well ... I'm the UCESP's indian. Back to normal posting next week.

FWIW: no aboriginal native Americans were harmed in organizing this conference.

We had guests this past weekend (which means less time for blogging before and during).

After that, the rest of the family went out of town for a few days. If you are an academic you know that means uninterrupted time, and a chance to cram that time full of quality research (for me that has been referee's reports and a whole stack of articles).
