Maybe opinion journal needs to do some fact checking of its own before mocking what is, in fact, an accurate statement. C'mon people, a google search is all that's needed.

In 1863 (three score and sixteen years after ratification), a group of protestant churches organized the "national reform association" which petitioned congress to amend the premable of the constitition of United States to read as follows:

**"WE, THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES, [recognizing the being and attributes of Almighty God, the Divine Authority of the Holy Scriptures, the law of God as the paramount rule, and Jesus, the Messiah, the Saviour and Lord of all,] in order to form a more perfect union . . . do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."**

Thanks for the information John.

I still think there are two problems with what Ms. Goodman wrote: 1) Lincoln had no authority to reject anything like this, and 2)the proposal by the National Reform Association was not to "inject" their statement into the preamble (since the Constitution itself cannot be changed), but to amend the Consitution with the alternative statement of the exisitng preamble.
