Dave Tufte

Well, that was quick. I got this letter, apparently from the author of bookofjoe, about an hour after my post.

Dear David,

It occurs to me that many people, not just those who've commented on my site in the past couple days, believe as you do that extrinsic pressures/factors forced the shutdown/change in bookofjoe.

Not so, actually.

See below.

I think I'll post at 9:01 p.m. tonight to this effect.

All best,

Subject: the unvarnished truth about why bookofjoe went down in its late, lamented form

Dear Jake,

There was not any litigation/copyright/threat/traffic volume/host issue.

Rather, someone very near and dear to me was being hurt badly by being related to me.

As E.M. Forster once said, "If given a choice between betraying a friend or my country, I hope I would betray my country."

In my case, it was a similar choice, and really wasn't even worth a second's hesitation.

I will always choose those I truly love over myself.

In fact, one might even consider that a criterion for deciding whom one truly loves.

All best,

I wouldn't bother with the new bookofjoe either if I were myself simply reading stuff online!
