Thomas DiLorenzo has an excellent post entitled "Four Thousand Years of Price Controls" at the Mises Economics Blog. It's chock full of great examples, many of which I had not heard of; including the rather startling fact that after 3 years of intermittent price controls the Continental Congress repealed price controls which were leading to the privation of the Continental Army leading to its being relatively well provisioned within about 6 months:
Whereas it hath been found by experience that limitations upon the prices of commodities are not only ineffectual for the purpose proposed, but likewise productive of very evil consequences--resolved, that it be recommended to the several states to repeal or suspend all laws limiting, regulating or restraining the Price of any Article.
