Is blogging by scholars scholarly activity? There is no solid answer on this, but "no ... er ... maybe" seems to be the consensus.
I have previously posted that my interpretation of the old AACSB standards (under which many schools will continue to operate for several years) is that blogging absolutely falls under their definition of intellectual contribution. But, there are new standards, and now I'm not so sure.
For those not in the know, AACSB is the top accrediting body for business schools and colleges. Most of the schools you have heard of (and all the top one) are AACSB accredited.
Here are some excerpts from the new standard.
Generally, intellectual contributions should meet two
tests:
- Exist in public written form, and
- Have been subject to scrutiny by academic peers or practitioners prior to publication.
The last one is the problem. It's clearly problematic for bloggers though - how do you open for comments before you post? It is also hard to argue that working papers that are circulated are any different from blog posts on the count of "scrutiny ... prior to publication". Obviously, this criteria is also missing something about self-selecting who provides your scrutiny - given the horror stories of lack of editorial blindness, blogs are probably more credible on this count.
Of course, accrediting bodies are pretty good at offering flexibility
- The policies that guide the development of intellectual contributions should clearly specify:
- The expected targets or outcomes of the activity;
- The priority and value of different forms of intellectual contributions consistent with the school’s mission and strategic management processes;
- Clear expectations regarding quality of the intellectual contributions and how quality is assured (e.g. specific target journals or outlets, selectivity requirements, etc); and
- The quantity and frequency of outcomes expected over the AACSB review period.
These tend to suggest that if a (typically younger and technologically adept) blogger can convince (the typically older and more conservative) dean and administrators that their blogging is legitimate, then it is also acceptable to AACSB as long as there is a paper trail.
Then there is the list of acceptable intellectual activities. I've expurgated, but it is hard to argue that a good blog is any less acceptable than:
- Research monographs [there can be a lot of navel gazing in those];
- roceedings from scholarly meetings;
- Papers presented at academic or professional meetings;
- Faculty research seminars;
- Publications in trade journals;
- Book reviews;
- Published cases with instructional materials;
The italics are added for clarity. The generality of the AACSB list is intended to convey the list of possible activities that "you can get points for", and not to be any sort of ordinal ranking. My point is that we really need to ask ourselves whether we would rather read an item from that list or a blog, and which we would learn more from. If you're reading this, you already know the answer.
The last statement on this standards page definitely allows for some latitude:
Over time, the policies should be subject to review and demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement.
Ask yourself ... do you know any academics who blog about issues in their fields who are not seeking continuous improvement?
If you "post" an article to your blog and invite comments, inclduing from academic peers, and a record of those comments exists (as the comments on your post), and then you "publish" a final, post peer reviewed version, why wouldn't that meet the standard?
What impact would making the peer review comments available to the whole world have? Positive or negative? My guess is positive, but maybe I have a rosy view of the the motivations of most academics.
There's also a question of impact in judging intellectual contribution. On this note blogs win hands down vs obscure academic journals.

Agreed.
(Of course, I do both scholarly publishing and blogging, and have had some bad experiences with the former - but that might reflect longer exposure.)
But, I worry about the phrase "subject to scrutiny by academic peers or practitioners prior to publication". That sounds like legalese for "we thought about blogging, and the answer is no, but we don't have the guts to come right out and say that".

Joe Schoenmann Wed, Oct http://tacosandtequilalv.com/nfljerseys/?id=117>new nike nfl jerseys 9, 2013 (4:08 p.m.) To understand the eye rolls from Las Vegans when yet another salesman promises the Next Big Thing, it helps to look back a few years.
It was February 2008, the dawn of the Great Recession. Then-Mayor Oscar Goodman and Councilman Gary Reese tried to control their laughter as a wannabe developer spoke of the enormous high-rise he wanted to build near Charleston Boulevard and 4th Street.
You really have the money to build this project? Goodman http://farrdesign.com/jerseys/?id=1805>nfl football jerseys asked.
We鈥檙e working on it, a company representative replied.
Uh-oh, Goodman said. Tough, tough, tough, tough times.
Well, came the testy reply, thank you for the recommendation.
Goodman and Reese then did a comic bit about how they were still awaiting a check from another developer of another high-rise, one of dozens announced at the time but never built. I checked on it, and I was told it would be in the mail, and we called day after day, Goodman said, starting to laugh.
It was coming from Salt Lake City, though, Reese added, giggling.
It was a hilarious moment of pure honesty by local electeds faced with big promises and disappointing outcomes. Goodman and Reese are out of office now, but the hope is that city officials haven鈥檛 forgotten the lesson, even during tough times when the temptation to believe overwhelms feelings of doubt or common sense.
Sometimes, it鈥檚 better to just cut your losses and forge ahead. Which brings us to the story of Krave and Neonopolis. When nightclub owner Kelly Murphy held a widely-attended press conference more than http://farrdesign.com/jerseys/?id=852>nhl wholesale jerseys a year ago to announce Krave鈥檚 move from the Strip into Downtown鈥檚 http://farrdesign.com/jerseys/?id=806>nhl jerseys for sale Neonopolis and its expansion into the largest gay club in the country, it was heralded as the Next Big Thing.
Well, the state closed Krave six weeks ago for tax issues, and last week the City Council denied liquor licenses for Krave and sister-business Drink & Drag, also in Neonopolis.
The Fremont Street complex has long been a graveyard for the many businesses that have tried to do business there, despite its operator, Rohit Joshi, celebrating this or that project as the next big thing for his mall.
Sure, Heart Attack Grill seems to be working there. Denny鈥檚 is chugging along. A microbrewery is moving in, and there are some other small, interesting shops inside. But walk into the Neonopolis courtyard any given day and you鈥檒l find the place devoid of foot traffic, your voice echoing off the walls.
The question is whether Neonopolis鈥攐r Krave鈥攊s important to the mission of Downtown鈥檚 rebirth.
It was built for that purpose, part of long-ago Mayor Jan Jones鈥?attempt to revitalize the urban core (the city spent some $30 million on a parking structure under the mall). And there are signs that Downtown Project, which says it鈥檚 spending $350 million on redevelopment in the neighborhood, wants Neonopolis to succeed. The organization has lent money to Heart Attack Grill to get the restaurant up and running, it鈥檚 a minority partner in Banger Brewing and it鈥檚 still trying to negotiate something related to Krave, in which it is also a minority partner. Some say http://farrdesign.com/jerseys/?id=1249>baby hockey jersey DTP is trying to buy the club, but if the former theater space turns into nothing, if it鈥檚 left empty, should anyone care?
If not for the few businesses that seem to be working out there, I can imagine Neonopolis getting set for the next great implosion party.
Maybe this is as good as it gets for Neonopolis. Maybe Downtown doesn鈥檛 need a hulking mall on its main drag. Maybe we should just put it in the rear-view mirror and keep moving east with the flow.
Joe Schoenmann doesn t just cover Downtown, he lives and works there. He is Greenspun Media Group s embedded Downtown journalist, stationed at an office in Emergency Arts. His work appears in the Las Vegas Sun and Las Vegas Weekly. Share
