In describing the Haida, John Valleant used the word moiety.
Generically, it means a half.
Specifically in this case, it meant the anthropological usage:
Either of two kinship groups based on unilateral descent that together make up a tribe or society.
The Haida tribe is organized as two super-clans, so this makes sense.
